11 Buckden Roundabout February 2022 Village News BUCKDEN BRANCH - ROYAL BRITISH LEGION Something a little different this month. I set out below the substance of an exchange between myself and The Common- wealth War Graves Commission. My original E - mail: There is a headstone in Buckden Cemetery (Huntingdonshire) to Major A F G Bull MBE Intelligence Corps, died 1st November 1975. It appears to be a CWG headstone except that there are two slight cut downs either side of the top instead of the usual smooth curve. There are many similar headstones in Wyton cemetery. Are these maintained by the CWGC and how do I find anything more about them? Thanks for your help. Reply from The Commonwealth War Graves Commission: Thank you for your recent e mail. With regard to your query, the grave of Major A G F Bull, MBE, is one of many thousands which we classify as 'Non World War Dead (MOD) and is one that we simply maintain on behalf of the MOD, under an Agen- cy basis. These type of graves have a non war grave marker with the edges clipped, to distinguish them from our First and Second World War casualties. We keep no information on these casualties however, apart from the brief military partic- ulars that were provided to us by the MOD. It is unlikely that you will be able to find out any detailed information about him because of his position, and data protection, but you could try contacting the MOD's Joint Casualty and Compassionate Cen- tre, via the link below: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/joint - casualty - and - compassionate - centre - jccc We were living in Buckden when Major Bull was buried, but hadn ’ t been here that long and have no recollection of any- thing at the time. I take the point politely made by CWGC about his “ position ” and, obviously, have no wish to pry into matters which may be or have been classified, but if anyone has any information which can be legitimately passed on it might fill a small blank page in our village history. If anyone has anything they can pass on, perhaps they could E - mail me at peter.mount@btconnect.com. If information is passed in confidence, it will be treated accordingly; otherwise, I would like to publish anything provided in a future edition of The Roundabout. Peter Mount, Chairman.
