The Almshouse flats are unfurnished dwellings, designed with the needs of older people in mind. The aim is to provide convenient and comfortable accommodation in a setting that allows residents to come and go as they please. The Almshouse is the resident ’ s home for as long as s/he is able to live an independent life. Resi- dents pay a modest weekly maintenance contribution and, in addition, may receive support from the statutory authorities. A Warden is employed to provide access to and liaison with these authorities. Having a Warden also means that support is provided regularly and can assist with summoning help if needed. We now have TWO vacancies in the South ’ s Alms- houses (the older of the two charity properties) If you are interested, please contact the Clerk for more information and an application form: Joe Greenway, 2 St Hughs Road, Buckden, PE19 5UB or joe.greenway@btinternet.com Applications close Friday 15 December 2023. MEMORIES OF MIKE STOREY The Roundabout regretfully has to report the loss of another village character. Mike Storey was a man of many talents. He was Clerk to the Parish Council in the 1990s but is best remembered for his liter- ary and theatrical talents. He was an early member of the Buckden History Society and his lecture on the ‘ Coal (Kohl) Mines of Buckden ’ is still remembered. He edited the book ‘ Buckden - A Huntingdon- shire Village ’ still available on - line at https://tinyurl.com/mvvbkk4j . He wrote and directed “ Playing with Fire (Pageantry and Riot in Buckden) ” in June 1990 to raise funds for Buckden Towers. He also directed and acted in many Buckden Theatre Group plays and pan- tomimes sometimes under an assumed name and often lent his talents to other local groups Including ‘ Shakespeare At The George ’ . He was also a published author of a spoof spy book. Sadly, in recent years ill health has prevented him using his many talents for the benefit of the village. - TFH Friends of Buckden Towers The Council of the Friends of Buckden Towers would like to thank all the en- thusiastic quizzers who attended our quiz on 3 rd November.
