Their market expanded outside the village be- yond the level crossing to Offord and over the A1 to Perry. When regulations tightened in the 1980’ s, a tractor and trailer was deemed unacceptable for residential delivery purposes. This was a temporary impediment to business. Tom converted a shed to create a farm - shop. Now the customers came to the farm, all hours, and all the family were involved meeting, greeting and serving. With the arrival of ‘ Top Banana ’, beside the village green, some folk expressed concern regarding the direct competition. They need not have worried; it was Martin ’ s Farm supplying the local fresh produce and Tom willingly helped in the shop. In 1992 the partnership between Tom and John came to an end and Martin ’ s Farm was sold. This precipitated a house move to ‘ The City ’. Leav- ing the farm was a huge wrench for Tom and Vera but the move to Manor Gardens did offer closer proximity to their elder daugh- ter. Tom continued working his rented land, but now his produce primarily headed to St Neots market. Vera died suddenly in 2003, just a few months after celebrating 50 very happy years of marriage. Tom continued to work the land well into his 80’ s. He could often be seen pushing, rather than riding, his bike. He always had time to stop for a chat – enquiring as to the wellbeing of family members, sharing his news and a memory of times past. When at home he benefitted from im- mense support from his family and the occasional glass of ‘ Do Me Good ’! Tom maintained he ’ d had a good life having spent his working days doing the things he most enjoyed and having clocked - up a grand 94 years.
